3Com on the Internet
Mega-merger: 3Com
to acquire USRobotics
in $6.6
billion deal.
3Com is a member of the so-called "Open
56K Forum," a promotional group for "K56flex"
56K technology from Rockwell. It's unclear what impact the acquisition
will have on the competition with "x2" 56K technology from USRobotics.
(See "What are 56K modems?")
Note: In the opinion of this author the advertising claims made
for the EtherLink III LAN+Modem PC Card ("modem that is actually 50% faster
than the leading competitor's") may well be misleading. This author doubts
that the EtherLink III LAN+Modem PC Card is significantly faster than other
V.34 modems in real world applications.

and difficulty of those upgrades, depending on the age and model of the
modem, ranges from downloading and installing free Flash firmware to return-to-factory
for rework.
